Benefits of White and Brown Noise Machine for Babies

February 19, 2020 //  by Geoff

When babies are asleep, their parents can rest as well or even finish their other daily duties. However, if you are experiencing issues while you’re trying to put your child to sleep, remember that you’re not the lonely case. Many new parents have trouble with their babies’ sleep.

The good and quality night rest is essential for the proper development of every child. But many times, babies would rather snuggle or play, or even cry, rather than close their tiny eyes and fall asleep. New moms and dads find this part of parenting especially terrifying because there are no instructions on what to do in which situation.

Various companies that produce baby equipment came up with possible solutions like white noise machines. What these machines do is that they produce soothing sounds that should make babies more relaxed, and they should also help them overcome issues with falling asleep.

About Noise Generators

The majority of new parents believe that white noise generators are a great thing. But they’re not the inventions of the modern age. The first type of these machines was created in the early ‘60s of the last century. As technology progressed during the years, these machines evolved as well. Today, people can opt for models reproducing all colors of the sound, depending on their needs.

A lot of things around us emit frequencies that appeal to the baby’s ears. For example, these are sonic waves from many home appliances, such as TVs, hairdryers, vacuum cleaners, but also various noises from nature. Even we can make sounds that fall into white noise (‘shushing’ and mild whispering).

However, we often cannot influence the volume, frequency, and repetition of these tones. That’s why the idea of ‘trapping’ these tones into the sound machines is excellent. Parents can turn on these devices whenever the baby needs to calm down and prepare for sleep.

Colors of Sound Explained

White noise is the one that’s widespread across the sound spectrum. It includes sonic waves of high, low, and mid-range frequencies altogether. If you compare it with the sounds you’re familiar with; white noise is the most similar to a waterfall with water falling on different surfaces at various speeds.

Under the term of ‘pink noise,’ scientists consider white noise, but in louder low-frequencies, which are softer at the high end. A good example of these sounds in the real world would be a light to medium rainfall. Many people agree these sonic waves are pleasant and soothing, and they seem like the best solution for calming crying or colicky baby.

More about the calming effects of pink noise read on the following source:

The third variant of tones used in sound machines is the brown (or red) noise. These sonic hues are deeper at the low ends. They remind of hard but also gentle surf that comes along with a storm. These tones are great to create a pleasant working and learning atmosphere and increase focus, but also to help you put your baby to sleep.

Why Are These Machines Good?

Depending on the baby, the white and brown noise machines can significantly help the quality of their night rest. Still, they can also be accommodating with relaxing and allowing them to release the pent-up energy. Some babies will react better to brown noise sounds while others will feel much better with the white ones. However, some babies may react negatively to both sound spectrums.

There are many models of sound generators available on the market to help parents whose babies have sleeping issues. The recommendation is to find a single device that can reproduce various frequencies of sonic waves. That way, you can test which one suits your infant.

Most of these machines are powered by batteries, which is both a good and bad thing. Bad, because batteries can drain, and good because you can move the device wherever you want. But if you’re not happy with changing the batteries, you should find a device with the power plug and enjoy the perpetual soothing sounds.

Babies Do Know the Difference

Although scientists agree that pink noise is the best solution for calming the grumpy baby, some newborns prefer brown noise, i.e., tones of lower frequencies. That happens because each human has a different perception of sounds. If you decide to change the sounds on the machine for some reason, your child will notice the difference.

Babies enjoy routine. When you find what works for your newborn to finally calm down and fall asleep, don’t do further experiments. Any change in environmental conditions can make your child distressed and upset. On this page, see how what these conditions are and how to provide them.

If one type of noise for calming your baby down proved to be a success, there’s no need to change it out of the blue. Drastic changes may involve extreme results that everyone would prefer to avoid. Machines reproducing soothing tones won’t harm your kid, so you can use it all the time until your youngster learns how to relax and fall asleep all by themselves.

Providing the quality rest for their babies and themselves is of the utmost importance for new parents. Babies need sleep so they could grow and develop healthily, and adults generally need to relax and release built-up stress levels. And there’s nothing better than enjoying the sounds of nature like the rushing wind, rainfall in the forest, or a river water flow.
