Tips for Furniture Removals on Wood Floors

February 15, 2019 //  by Geoff

Heavy furniture can be the bane of the lives of amateur furniture removalists. Most of us have tried to move a heavy piece of furniture at one time, and you may have seen the marks that can result on those beautiful wood floors. Fortunately, as professionals in furniture removals, we have some tips to help you.

Never Drag

The first tip can be difficult to follow, but you should never drag any heavy piece of furniture across a wood floor. If you can’t manage furniture removals on your own, enlist some help, so the item can be lifted.

Clean Your Floors Before You Start Moving

One of the most common and easiest mistakes you can make during furniture removals is failing to clean your floors before you start. Allowing tiny bits of gravel, dirt and other debris to remain on your floor can scratch against the surfaces, even if your item is properly padded.

Go Slowly and Carefully

Although moving can be a stressful process, it is important to take care when you move heavy furniture. The key is to go slowly and carefully to not only make it less likely that scrapes will occur, but also reduce the risk of an injury. Moving slowly will also help to keep padding or any other protective measure in place and avoid slipping.

Try to Lighten the Load

Even the heaviest piece of furniture can be lightened up to make it easier to move. You should start by removing any drawers, shelves, or cabinet contents. Even removing cushions can help to avoid damage and make moving the piece easier. Bulky cushions can make moving a sofa even more challenging, particularly when trying to get through doors, so try and streamline any item before you start moving.

Use Towels

If you’re concerned about moving a heavy piece of furniture on your wood floors, try using old towels. Towels are not only ideal padding, but they can provide some protection for your floor as you can slide the item more smoothly. You should be aware that your towels may get ripped or scuffed during this process, so stick to old towels you’re not bothered about using in the future. If you don’t have old towels, you can use cardboard, but this is more prone to slipping, and you could risk floor damage if you’re not careful.

Avoid Dollies

Although a dolly can be a great tool during moving, it should be avoided when you’re trying to move heavy furniture across your wood floors. When under a heavy load, dolly wheels can actually cause just as much damage as dragging the item itself.

Think Back Protection

Finally, don’t forget that as worried as you are about your wood floors, you need to protect your back. Carrying heavy items improperly can lead to serious back issues, so if you’re struggling get some help.
