How Nature Can Help You Cope with Stress

April 22, 2021 //  by Geoff

If there’s one constant in life, it’s that you will experience stress. Some of it is negative. Your job might be stressful. Maybe you’re having financial problems. Some stress is positive. A new baby is a joyous occasion, but it is a change and can be stressful. If you’re experiencing the ups and downs of life and feeling a little blue, get out in nature. Go for a walk on a hiking trail. Take a bike ride. Sit on a bench near the lake. Spending time in nature may help with brain fog in teenager and get them talking to you.

Humans Have a Deep Connection With Nature

For generations, people lived off the land. Although there are so many technical marvels that give society more freedom from the hard work, we still have that hunger for nature. Humans have an innate need to connect with plants and animals. The sun provides vitamin D for your cells to work. Sunlight is the best source for vitamin D. Humans need to spend time in nature.

Nature Improves Mood and Focus

Research from an interdisciplinary Cornell team found that college students who spend just 10 to 15 minutes in nature lessened their mental and physical stress. The students were happier and less anxious than students who didn’t spend time in nature. The researchers found that walking or sitting in nature had the same benefits. All the health and wellness apps can’t do the same thing as getting out in nature.

Being in Nature Is Good For Your Physical Health

Studies have shown that providing a view of the forest from hospital rooms helps patients who are feeling down. A walk in nature combats depression. Working out outside helps reduce anxiety. Being outside has been shown to reduce your blood pressure. Your heart rate slows down when you’re outside in nature.

Recharge Your Brain

Humans can get very self-involved. Other research has shown that a 90-minute walk in nature can stop that mental rumination. Time in nature recharges your brain. It’s not just being outside that helps. The colors of nature, namely green, have a calming effect on your body. Plus, getting outside and away from your devices and technology can help your brain process information more effectively.

Changing Your Scenery Can Inspire You

When you’re feeling uninspired and dull, getting out in nature can help you improve your problem-solving skills and be more creative. Getting outside and taking a walk can just make you think about things differently. When you’re busy and can’t focus, it might seem counterintuitive to take a break. Going outside can free your mind for a bit, giving you the energy to come back recharged and ready to work.

Stress is always going to be with you. Find ways to positively deal with your stress. If your symptoms are serious, don’t hesitate to talk to a mental health professional. When you get a case of the blues, take yourself outside to see if your mood changes.
