4 Ways To Reduce Home Allergens

October 24, 2019 //  by Geoff

Allergens are commonly found inside the home just as they are found outside in nature. Luckily, there are many ways to control the allergens in your home to keep your family healthy. Irritants like pollen, animal dander, mold, dust, and dirt can be harmful if left to recirculate inside, but there are effective ways to combat these harmful particulates so you can breathe more easily.

Choose an Effective HVAC Filter

Maintaining high-quality, purified, clean indoor air is easy with the right HVAC filter. Proper maintenance is key, so you should inspect and replace filters every 30 days or as needed. Special types of HEPA filters can eliminate a large percentage of harmful air pollutants and make a huge difference in the air quality of your home. For maximum air quality, choose air filters that are designed to remove small air particles and a wide variety of irritants.

Keep Your Home Clean

Dust and dust mites are huge triggers for allergies. To keep them away, it is important to follow proper home cleaning procedures to minimize irritation and unwanted reactions. Regular detailed cleaning and mold prevention are basic ways to keep allergens out of the home. Consistently sweep and mop your floors, remove old carpeting, and dust nooks and crannies to remove harmful elements from the air. Use natural cleaning products to decrease chemical residue and keep your indoor air free of pollutants. Be sure to maintain low humidity in areas like the kitchen and bathroom to decrease the potential growth of mold and mildew.

Identify Allergens in Your Home

If someone in your family is experiencing debilitating asthma or allergy issues, the best way to find out what’s wrong is by visiting an allergist or medical professional. A professional can determine the cause of the irritation, and steps can be taken to eliminate or reduce contact with this element. Being able to pinpoint the source of the problem can lead to a clearer path for preventive measures.

Allergy-Proof Your Home

There are many ways to allergy-proof your home beyond HVAC filters and basic cleaning. Use dust-mite proof coverings to protect your pillows, mattresses, and bedding, and store all linens and clothing in dry areas like closets. Rinse walls, blinds, and window curtains periodically to remove dust and air particle buildup. Replace carpets with hardwood or linoleum flooring, and regularly vacuum or wash area rugs and other fabric surfaces in your home. Be sure to use a high-quality HEPA filter for your vacuum as well to eliminate even the smallest allergens.

By understanding where allergens come from and how to create an environment that does not welcome them, you can not only increase the air quality of your home but also the health quality of your family. Finding out what you or your loved ones are allergic to may be challenging, but once you’re able to identify the cause, you can build a plan for a healthy lifestyle and ensure your family stays healthy, happy, and safe from irritating pollutants.
