3 Things To Look For In A Piano For Your Kids

March 21, 2022 //  by Geoff

If your child has shown some interest in learning how to play the piano, you might be wondering how you should go about getting them this instrument so that they can play and practice starting at this young age. While there is no shortage in pianos available, many parents are hesitant to spend the money on a new and expensive instrument when their child hasn’t truly committed to this. But luckily, there are other options.

To help you see just what these are, here are three things to look for in a piano for your kids.

Consider A Keyboard First

Sometimes, starting your young child off with a full-sized piano might not be the smartest move. While it might help them become more familiar with this instrument sooner, if you don’t have the space or you’re worried about the size and financial investment of getting a piano, starting off with a keyboard may be a better option.

The digital keyboards that are now available on the market come in a variety of sizes, and you can find one that will fit your child perfectly. Also, the sound that comes from the keyboard can be tuned to be very similar to that of a piano, which can make it easier for your child to transition from a keyboard to a piano once they’re ready for that.

Get Something Smaller

If you’ve decided that you do want your child to have a piano rather than a keyboard but you’re still concerned about the size, there are smaller pianos that you can get for when your child is little and still has a lot of room to grow.

Smaller pianos will usually only have 30 keys rather than the 88 keys of a traditional piano. But when your child is very little and just getting familiar with the piano for the first time, having fewer keys might be better for them. Then, as they grow in their comfortability and knowledge of the piano, they can move to a larger version that has the traditional number of keys.

Choose A Full-Sized Used Piano

When you’re ready to get your child a full-sized piano for them to play and practice on, you might want to choose a used piano rather than buying a brand new one to bring into your home.

With a full-sized piano, your child will learn all there is to know about playing the piano and will get the right tension from the keys and sound of the instrument. And when you get a used piano, you’ll be saving yourself a lot of money on this purchase. Just make sure you check out the piano before you take it home to ensure that it will work for you.

If you’re wanting your child to start learning how to play the piano from a young age, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you choose what type of instrument to start them out on.
