When you look back at your school years and then see where people ended up, the gift of hindsight makes you realize that most of the students who you knew were always destined to do what they did. Comparing the present to the past you can see who managers, bricklayers or software developers would be, we just didn’t know it at the time. One such person that I should’ve known what would happen to was my good friend Mahesh Navani, someone who was always the brightest kid in class. Mahesh has just completed his 4th degree and already has 2 masters under his name, and I should have known that he would go on to become an academic. These people are a rare breed and here is why Mahesh stayed within education.
Pursuit of Knowledge
For Mahesh it was never about the credentials which he would gain by continuously studying and achieving all of the qualifications which he has. For Mahesh Navani it was about the pursuit of knowledge, something which he always had a passion and a level of commitment for. When we were younger Mahesh used to read people like Aristotle and Plato, and he always dreamed of becoming even half as knowledgeable as they were. This is why he has constantly pushed himself to learn more about more subjects and ultimately to improve his world knowledge.
Teaching
Whilst he studies one degree, Mahesh Navani will offer his support at the university to give lectures on the last degree or masters which he has just completed. Mahesh often says that there is no point having knowledge if it cannot be passed down and this is exactly why he has dedicated himself to teaching as much as he has dedicated himself to learning. He often tells me that the best part of his job is when he has a student who is just as passionate about learning as he is, and this is why he keeps on going back and giving out free lectures, in return for usage of the university facilities.
Bringing about Change
Mahesh never wanted his knowledge to be futile and beyond passing it on to others, he also wanted to use it for good. This is why over the years he has worked with a number of mathematical institutes and laboratories, trying to use his knowledge to bring about change in the world or to find solutions to problems which exist. Mahesh hasn’t delivered anything ground breaking just yet but he has been part of teams which have created some solutions which have now been put into practice. I really respect this aspect of how Mahesh Navani thinks because many may rest on their laurels and simply try to amass as much knowledge as possible, whereas Mahesh has decided that his knowledge should be put to good use.
Next up for Mahesh is a doctorate which he should complete by 2021, beyond that, who knows just what this man can do for the world.
